In 1947 Blair and Maurine Smith with two small daughters were looking for a new work. Blair had been employed at Hill Air Force base maintaining the fighter planes. A friend introduced his to a new vacuum that he was selling “door-to-door”. It was a Filter Queen and Blair saw it as an opportunity! He had $137.00 dollars in the bank so he bought one vacuum, sold it, bought two, sold them, and this was the beginning of Smith-Crown Co. Located at 2011 ½ South llth East, next to Dr. T. E. Robinson (who had his office there until he was 90 years old). Maurine ran the office and Blair managed the many salesmen he hired. The machines were sold door to door. It was a good business . . . .and sometimes a difficult business because salesmen would not be able to make enough to support their families and Blair and Maurine would help to supplement their income. They worked hard at it and even opened stores in Bozeman, Montana, Portland Oregon, Seattle Washington and Phoenix Arizona. The store in Phoenix is still operating and owned by Blair’s nephew. Smith-Crown Co. in Sugar House continued to grow. The door to door sales became a thing of the past after a few years and the merchandise choices became varied. A repair department became an important part of the business. Smith-Crown changed locations, needing more space, and moved two buildings north to 1993 South 1100 East. They increased the inventory to carry the many varied and good vacuums available. Business flourished. . . .their staff sold and repaired vacuums, saunas, Tunturi exercise equipment . . . . .anything they thought was a quality product could easily be an item to sale. In the early 1970’s Blair was diagnosed with bladder cancer, and Maurine began taking on more responsibilities in the business and also caring for him and looking for medications and help that would extend his life. In 1976 he died and the full responsibility of the business fell to Maurine.who has continued to this day to be at the helm of the business. At the age of 89 (that’s a secret) she goes to work six days a week and is involved in decision making and making sure everything is done right!
